Baked ham & cheese croissant sandwiches are simple to make, tasty to eat, and a great choice for lunch or dinner. My family has been lucky enough to travel to Paris a few times; we always eat croissants and a Croque Monsieur sandwich. So this ham & cheese croissant sandwich recipe is the best of both worlds. Warm ham and melty cheese nestled between a toasted buttery croissant is so delicious you must try it!
Here’s what you need to make ham & cheese croissant sandwiches recipe:
Ham- Six slices of ham total, 3 for each sandwich.
Any kind of ham will work. I like sliced deli ham, because it can be customized to your preference of thickness. I like it cut on the thin side. But you can also buy pre-packaged ham as well. I usually get either black forest ham because it has a smoky flavor or a sweet honey ham which is on the sweeter side. I also like the rosemary sliced ham from Trader Joe’s. You could always use leftover ham if you prepared a whole ham during the holidays. Not in the mood for ham, try turkey instead!
Cheese- Four slices of cheese, 2 for each sandwich.
Havarti and swiss cheese are my favorite, but cheddar cheese or gruyere cheese are also great. Gruyere is on the more expensive side and I think swiss is a good substitute.
Croissants- Two croissants.
If you have a favorite bakery that’s where you’ll probably find the best quality croissant, but most don’t so I recommend just picking up store-bought croissants. Usually found in the bakery section of most grocery stores. Trader Joe’s also carries them in the bread section. Be sure they are large croissants and not the mini croissants that are also available. They will spend a little time in a warm oven so they will crisp up and become more flaky and delicious than eating them straight out of the package.
Arugula- One cup.
Arugula is a peppery flavored green that is readily available in most stores. If you are not a fan of arugula, feel free to leave it off.
Honey Dijon Vinaigrette-
2 tablespoons of olive oil, 2 teaspoons of honey, 2 teaspoons of dijon mustard.
How to make baked ham & cheese croissant recipe:
Prep work
Begin by preheating your oven to 350 degrees. Next, grab a cookie sheet or baking sheet and set it aside. Now, let’s prepare the honey dijon vinaigrette. Use a small bowl and add the olive oil, honey, and dijon mustard. Stir together to combine until creamy. Set that aside until it’s time to use it.
Assemble the sandwich
First cut the croissant in half. Lay it flat on a cutting board and take a sharp serrated knife and cut across lengthwise to make two halves. A top and a bottom. Try to make them as even as possible. If any half is bigger it should be the bottom half. Now lets build the sandwich. Add the ham slices to the bottom half of the croissant. Add the sliced cheese to the top of the ham. Place this half on the baking sheet. Next, spread one teaspoon of the honey vinaigrette to the top half of the croissant. Place this cut side down on the baking sheet.
Bake sandwich and dress arugula
Bake in the oven for about 5-7 minutes until the cheese is melted and the croissant is slightly toasted. The half that has the vinaigrette should get a little more crispy and turn into a honey mustard glaze. So don’t take it out until the cut side crisps up and turns golden brown.
While the sandwiches are baking, you can “dress” the arugula with the vinaigrette. If the bowl is big enough add one cup of arugula to the vinaigrette and toss to coat the arugula. If you used a very small bowl you can either use a larger bowl and mix the arugula and dressing together. Or skip this step all together and drizzle the vinaigrette over the arugula once you place it on top of the hot ham and melted cheese.
Finish and serve
Remove the sandwiches from the oven. Divide the arugula between the two sandwiches and place on top of the ham and cheese half. If the arugula is already dressed with the vinaigrette add the croissant tops to each half and put on a plate. Otherwise drizzle the remaining vinaigrette over the greens and then put the top of the croissants on.
Options
I like a little extra zing to my sandwich so often times I like to dip my sandwich into a whole grain mustard, or a spicy mustard. Even your favorite honey mustard sauce would be good. If you want to take this sandwich to the next level consider adding a sunny side egg to the top of the cheese before closing it up. The runny yolk from the egg gives this sandwich the best flavor and now you have a great breakfast to serve. Adding an egg creates the best breakfast sandwich and your family will love it and want it for dinner too. Serve this with fresh fruit and a crunchy pickle.
