Crispy salami chips are a fun twist on a classic snack. I love salami on a charcuterie board with spicy mustard and sharp cheddar cheese. My kids also love salami and cheese for a snack so when I saw crispy salami chips I had to try and make it myself. They turned out crispy like a chip and when you dip it into the creamy mustard it’s so yummy.
They are effortless to make. Simply, bake salami slices in the oven and serve them with my homemade mustard dip. I think they would be a great addition to any cheese board or an easy appetizer at your next gathering. They might not be a substitute for traditional potato chips but they sure are good. I can’t wait for you to try these!
What you need to make crispy salami chips:
Salami- 12 slices of salami. You can make as little or as much as you like. If you want more than 12 slices you will need more than one baking sheet or you can bake them in batches. I like the small pre-sliced salami that comes packaged, but you can also go to the deli and get sliced salami or try Genoa salami. I would avoid thick slices of salami because it will not crisp up like a chip the way the thin slices do.
For the dip
Sour Cream- 1/4 cup of sour cream. Any brand will do. You can also try using Greek yogurt for a slightly tangy taste.
Mayonnaise- 1/4 cup of mayonnaise.
Dijon Mustard- 2 tbsp of Dijon mustard.
Spicy Brown Mustard- 2 tbsp of spicy brown mustard (like Gulden’s) or grainy mustard. (the kind where you can see the mustard seeds.) Feel free to try your favorite mustards here. Some can be spicy, others are mild and sweet. It just depends on your preference. If you use a spicy salami a sweet mustard would be a nice compliment.
How to make crispy salami chips:
Bake the salami
Begin by preheating your oven to 375 degrees. Grab a baking sheet. I do not cover it with aluminum foil or parchment paper because I find that the salami gets crispier without anything on the pan. However, in my photos, you will see that I used parchment paper. This was just an oversight on my part, they took longer to cook and got a little burnt so I prefer nothing on the pan.
Put the salami in a single layer on the baking sheet. Spread the pieces out so that they do not touch. Depending on the size of your baking sheet you should be able to get 12 slices on one baking sheet. If not, I recommend using 2 baking sheets or baking them in batches. If you are putting two baking sheets in at the same time be sure your oven racks are in the middle part of the oven. You don’t want either one too high or too low.
Bake for about 12-15 minutes until the edges start to get golden brown and the salami crisps up. Every oven is different so the cooking time may vary. Be sure to check on the salami periodically to make sure it’s not burning. It could take longer or shorter than the time listed on the recipe card. Also, they will get crispier as they cool off too. Once you remove the salami from the oven use kitchen tongs to take the salami and place it on paper towels. This absorbs any excess oil from the salami.
Make the dipping sauce
While the salami is baking prepare the side dip. To a bowl add sour cream, mayonnaise, Dijon mustard, and spicy mustard. Mix it all together with a spoon until fully combined. If serving to guests transfer the dip to a serving bowl and set aside until ready to serve. This could be made ahead of time and kept in the refrigerator in an airtight container until your guests arrive.
Ideas for serving
To all my enthusiasts of charcuterie, I think these would be a great addition to your board. It adds a new textured item and who doesn’t love a crunch with their cheese? Plus sometimes you don’t always want a cracker. You could also make salami sandwiches similar to a BLT. You could just swap out the bacon for crispy salami. They would also be good dipped in hummus or spread some soft whipped cream cheese on top.
These salami chips are an irresistible treat when dipped in the blended mustard- they are hard to resist! They may become the ultimate party food. I can’t wait for you to try them. If you make them, let me know what you think by leaving a comment or review.
