Even though it is October it is still warm here in Los Angeles! So before I go into my soup era I’ve got one more summertime recipe, the frozen yogurt smoothie bowl. Both of my daughters like to eat smoothies with a spoon, but they are not thick enough so I decided to come up with a thicker version of the berry smoothies they already like.
This yogurt bowl is thick and creamy and should be eaten with a spoon, it’s not meant for drinking. I like to use frozen fruit for the smoothie and fresh fruit for the topping. This recipe calls for frozen strawberries, blueberries, bananas, and fresh raspberries for the top. You’ll also need plain Greek yogurt and milk of choice. For the toppings, it’s up to you, but I add granola, chia seeds, and a drizzle of honey. So grab your blender and let’s make this refreshing treat!
Ingredients for smoothie bowl:
Milk- 1/2 cup of any kind of milk. Whole cow’s milk, almond milk, coconut milk, oat milk, or soy milk.
Yogurt- 1 cup of plain Greek yogurt. If you don’t have plain yogurt you could substitute vanilla yogurt or any flavor that you like. I prefer plain yogurt because it has a tart flavor versus a sweet one. The fruit naturally sweetens up the yogurt bowl and it tastes great.
Frozen Banana- 1/2 of a large frozen banana. The banana helps the smoothie achieve its creamy texture.
Frozen Strawberries- 1/2 cup frozen strawberries. If the berries are whole add about 4-5 strawberries.
Frozen Blueberries- 1/4 cup frozen blueberries.
Favorite Toppings- Fresh fruit: fresh raspberries. Dry toppings: Granola of any kind and Chia seeds. Honey drizzled over the top. Other things to consider adding on top are coconut flakes, chocolate chips, mixed berries, or crunchy nuts.
Optional Add-ins- For added protein, you could add vanilla protein powder. Hemp seeds or flax seeds also offer a ton of nutritional benefits. Excellent source of fiber, good for gut health, and helps reduce inflammation. Any of these things can be added directly to the mixture before blending it all. Another great addition to this yogurt bowl recipe would be to add peanut butter or almond butter. This changes the flavor and adds some protein as well.
Special Equipment- High-speed blender. It doesn’t have to be a fancy one, just a good one. You may have to use a rubber spatula to push down the sides and make sure everything blends together. There is not a lot of liquid in this smoothie because you want it to be really thick like ice cream, so be patient when blending. If you find that it will not mix, add a little bit more milk and try again.
Here’s how to make my favorite smoothie bowl recipe:
Add everything to a blender
Begin by adding the milk to the blender. Next, add, the frozen fruit. I prefer using frozen fruit because I don’t like to add ice and this ensures that the yogurt bowls are nice and cold. The key to a good smoothie is that it is really cold. If you don’t have frozen fruit then it would be ok to use fresh, it just won’t be as cold. Now that the fruit is in the blender add the yogurt.
Time to blend
Put the lid on top and begin blending on high. Blend for about 50-55 seconds until creamy and smooth. Because there is not a lot of liquid it takes a bit longer to combine the ingredients. You may need to pause blending and scrape down the sides of the blender to ensure that everything gets incorporated. If you find that the blade keeps spinning but is not blending add a drop or two of milk and push the fruit down to the bottom. Repeat until you are left with a creamy smoothie bowl.
Pour into a bowl
Pout everything into a bowl. This makes a pretty good size serving, if you feel it’s too much for one person divide it in half and serve two people. To the top of the smoothie bowl add chia seeds, fresh raspberries, granola and a drizzle of honey. This makes a delicious breakfast bowl, a refreshing lunch, or great afternoon snack. I hope that you try this recipe and if you do let me know what you think.
