How to make tortilla chips in the air fryer is easy and I’ll show you how! If you are like me chips are a must-have in my house. I love chips of all kinds, so when I discover a chip that is not bad for you and I can eat it guilt-free, I’m excited! I’ve made baked chips in the oven before, but the air fryer really achieves a crispy texture like a regular chip that you don’t get from the oven.
Here’s what you need to make tortilla chips in the air fryer:
There are only 3 ingredients needed today. Corn tortillas, salt, and oil of your choice. First, I like to use avocado or olive oil. To make it easy I love the kind that comes in a spray can. If you can’t find a spray oil, just brush on the oil. You don’t need a lot of oil, just a little. Second, the star of the recipe is corn tortillas! Any brand is fine. I like the thin Mission brand corn tortillas because they crisped up nicely. I’ve also used Trader Joe’s brand and they are great as well. The tortillas are on the thicker side so they did take longer to make than the Mission brand. Third, kosher salt is a must. I prefer salting the tortillas prior to cooking that way the salt sticks to each chip.
How to make these chips in an air fryer:
Let me begin by saying that all air fryers are different and I’ve only tried the one I have at home. I think that cooking times will vary between brands, but the basic idea should work no matter what brand of air fryer you have.
Before you start prepping your tortillas it is important to preheat your air fryer. Just like a regular oven, you don’t want to put food into a cold oven. Preheating gets everything going and cuts down on cooking time. I like to preheat for 5 minutes at 350 degrees.
Start by laying out the tortillas on a cutting board or flat surface. Spray or brush with oil on both sides of the tortillas and sprinkle with kosher salt. Next, stack the tortillas into a pile and cut them into fourths.
Let’s use the air fryer!
Place the cut tortillas in a single layer in the air fryer. Set the timer for 5 minutes and bake at 350 degrees. My air fryer blows the tortillas around a bit so I like to check halfway through and rearrange the tortillas to a single layer. This can be annoying but I haven’t found a way to avoid this. I’ve also let it go for the full 5 minutes then re-organized and cooked for an additional 1-2 minutes and that was fine. If they end up in a pile they don’t get evenly crispy so additional time was usually needed. So play around with it and do what works best for you.
Making tortilla chips in the air fryer is quick and easy. I hope you try making these guilt-free chips the next time your in the mood for chips and salsa!
