I love chips and salsa. It’s by far one of my favorite snacks. This is why I make this quick homemade salsa almost every week. It goes hand and hand with taco Tuesday and Mexican food. This great recipe uses both fresh ingredients and canned tomatoes so it can be enjoyed any time of the year. This easy homemade salsa will make you so happy you might not ever buy the jarred stuff again! It’s very easy to make and has fresh flavors made with simple ingredients.
Here is the ingredient list for this easy salsa recipe:
First, let me go over the fresh ingredients. I start with one garlic clove, some diced red onion, lime juice, fresh jalapenos, a pinch of sugar, salt, pepper, and a handful of fresh cilantro. Next, instead of using fresh tomatoes, I opt for canned tomatoes. I like to use the small can of Rotel brand diced tomatoes with peppers. Lastly, make sure you have a blender or food processor to puree all the ingredients.
How to make this quick homemade salsa:
The first step to making this easy recipe is to roughly chop the onion, remember it is going into a blender so it will get broken down more. Next, cut the jalapeno in half and remove the seeds and riband roughly chop. The rib is the thick line that runs down the pepper. This is where the heat lives in a pepper. If you are unsure of the heat level you prefer, just reserve some seeds and the ribs because you can always add some seeds and ribs into the salsa after you taste it. If you want a little extra heat then this is how you do it.
Let’s talk tomatoes!
This is a “mostly” fresh salsa because I’m using canned tomatoes. But I’m not embarrassed or trying to trick anyone. I have plenty of salsa recipes that call for fresh tomatoes, this is just not one of them! I also find using a can of tomatoes vs. fresh tomatoes really gives you a nice tomato flavor. Sometimes fresh tomatoes from the grocery store are really sad and don’t give you the best flavor.
One of my favorite things about this recipe is that you throw everything into a blender or food processor and puree until smooth. So go ahead and add your onion, garlic, jalapeno, lime juice, spices, cilantro, and tomatoes to the blender. The consistency is very similar to a classic Mexican restaurant salsa. However, If you prefer a chunkier salsa don’t blend it for as long or use the pulse button on your blender.
Extra things to note!
Feel free to double the recipe and make a big batch so you have leftovers for next time. The extra can be stored in an airtight container for up to a week. Also worth mentioning is If you want it really spicy try using a Serrano pepper instead of jalapeño. It will definitely give it a nice kick. I prefer a milder salsa for everyday use, but the spice level is a personal preference. This salsa pairs nicely with homemade tortilla chips, top a little bit over eggs in the morning or add it to your favorite taco or burrito. Whatever you decide to eat this salsa with I know you will thoroughly enjoy it.
