The best avocado toast recipe is here! Look no further you will love my version and it will be on constant rotation for breakfast or lunch. If you love a good avocado and sourdough bread, you probably have had or made this yourself. I debated on whether to post such a simple recipe, but I couldn’t resist as both my kids love it and I make it all the time. So I wanted to share it with you. This simple avocado toast recipe has so many variations you can customize it to your liking. Don’t like sourdough, try whole grain bread. If you want to add some veggies, try cherry tomatoes and cucumber slices. The options are endless.
Here’s what you need for the perfect avocado toast:
Avocado– Ripe avocados are a must. However, finding a perfectly ripe avocado can be tough unless you know what to look for. Look for a slightly soft avocado when you gently press on it. If it’s too hard it will not taste the best. Another trick to see if an avocado is ripe is to try and remove the small stem or stub at the top of the avocado. If it comes away easily and it’s green underneath the avocado should be ripe and ready to eat. If it’s brown underneath the avocado may be overripe and not as good. On the other hand, if the stem doesn’t come off then the avocado is not ripe yet. In which case you could put it next to a banana and it will ripen faster in a day or so.
Garlic– One peeled clove of fresh garlic. If raw garlic isn’t your thing try using garlic powder instead.
Toasted bread– One slice of bread. Any type of bread will work. Sourdough is my favorite and a good bread to try if you’re not sure. Whole grain, whole wheat, or gluten-free bread also work.
Butter– This is totally optional, but for those here looking for recipes for recovery spreading the toast with a teaspoon of butter before rubbing the garlic is a great way to add fat and calories to the dish.
Olive oil– Drizzle of extra-virgin olive oil over the top of the smashed avocado.
Salt and Pepper– I usually use Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper. But you could also try a flaky sea salt.
Other seasoning to try– Red pepper flakes for some spice, everything bagel seasoning, or onion powder.
How to make avocado toast:
To begin with you want to toast the bread. It’s important to get the bread golden brown and crunchy. This is the vessel that holds the creamy avocado spread so it needs to be toasted right otherwise you will end up with a soggy piece of bread. The best bread in my opinion is sourdough, but any bread works, preferable a dense kind, not a soft sandwich bread. While the bread is toasting, prepare the avocado mixture.
Cutting an avocado-Step by Step:
1. Start with a ripe avocado. Using a sharp knife. If you are new to cutting an avocado, I highly recommend putting a small dish towel or folded wash cloth in the palm of your hand to hold the avocado with. This protects your hand in case the knife goes all the way through to your hand. This is a very common kitchen injury, one which I have avoided.
2. Slice through the avocado length wise until you feel the pit. Then rotate the knife carefully and slowly cut around the pit. Remove the knife and twist the two halves in opposite direction to separate the halves from one another,
3. To remove the pit. Hold the half with the pit in your hand with a dish towel. CAREFULLY with force aim the length of the knife at the pit so the knife sticks into the pit. Twist the knife to pull out the pit. To discard the pit from the knife, whack it on the side of the trash can. Or use the dish towel and grab the pit and pull it off the knife.
4. Cut each half in half and carefully peel pack the skin of the avocado. Alternatively use a spoon scoop out the flesh of the avocado and add it to a small bowl. Season the avocado with salt and pepper to taste. You could also squeeze a little lemon juice into the mixture as well.
Assemble the toast:
Once the bread is nice and toasted, spread one teaspoon of softened butter across the top of the bread, Next, hold the peeled garlic clove in your hand and rub it across the warm toast. The flavor of the garlic will release onto the toast. If you only want a subtle garlic flavor only rub a little, if you love garlic go crazy and rub it back and forth a few times. First time trying garlic on toast I would only rub a little and if you’re not a fan of garlic, skip this step entirely. Don’t have fresh garlic, grab garlic powder and sprinkle a 1/4 teaspoon over the top.
Grab the prepped piece of toast and spoon the avocado over the top. Spreading it out evenly. Finish with a drizzle of olive oil and a pinch of salt. This is a perfect place to stop, however if you want to take this to the next level try some of my favorite variations below.
Optional toppings:
- Add arugula, micro-greens, or sprouts to the top of the avocado spread. Squeeze some fresh lemon or lime juice over the greens.
- Top the avocado with a fried yolky egg or hard boiled egg sliced in half.
- Top the avocado with sunflower seeds and crushed red chili flakes
- Top the avocado with thinly sliced red onions and tomatoes
- Top the avocado with crumbled crispy bacon.
- Top the avocado with crumbled feta cheese, sliced cucumber, kalamata olives and thinly sliced red onion.
I love avocado toast and I hope after you try my version, you do too!

Notes
1. Adding butter to the toast is totally optional. For those here for recipes for recovery adding butter is an easy way to add fat and calories to the dish. I highly recommend as it doesn’t change the taste.
2. Rubbing raw garlic on the warm toast is optional as well. Garlic adds great flavor, but it can be strong and not everyone loves it.
3. Adding egg or crumbled bacon to the top of the toast is a great way to add protein or fat. It also can be served on the side for a complete breakfast.
