This tuna melt on English muffin recipe is easy and quick for any day of the week. I love a classic tuna melt recipe grilled on buttery sourdough and gooey melty cheese down the side, but let’s face it we don’t always have time for this restaurant special. So for a quick lunch I grab an English muffin, spread my homemade tuna mixture top it with some cheddar cheese pop it in the oven broiler for a couple of minutes, and voila tuna melt muffins!
Here’s what you need to make English muffin tuna melts:
Tuna– 1 can of tuna fish. Any brand. I prefer the solid white albacore tuna in water from Trader Joe’s.
Mayonnaise and Mustard– A little of each to mix in with the tuna. Yellow mustard is standard, but you can also try Dijon, or spicy brown mustard.
English Muffin– 1 English muffin split
Cheese– 2 slices of any cheese you like. American cheese, sharp cheddar cheese, swiss cheese, Monterey Jack, or mozzarella would work. American is the best-melted cheese, but for rich flavor, I would go with sharp cheddar or Swiss.
*Optional– Sliced tomato. You would add this on top of the tuna before the slice of cheese.
How to make a tuna melt on English muffin:
The first step to this easy tuna melt is to turn the broiler on in the regular oven. You could also use a toaster oven if you prefer. Now that the oven is on, take the English muffin halves and lightly toast them in the toaster. I like to do this before putting them in the oven that way the only thing the oven has to do is melt the cheese. The muffin will already be crispy.
Next, open the canned tuna and drain it well. Use a small or medium-sized bowl and combine the drained tuna with mayonnaise and mustard. I love a little Dijon mustard if you like the kick. Add some salt and black pepper and give it a good stir. This is the most basic tuna salad mix, so if you have more time and want a bit more, add in some small diced red onion and celery for a nice crunch. Other optional ingredients are diced green onions and fresh herbs, like dill or basil.
Now that the tuna salad is ready grab your toasted English muffins divide the tuna evenly and spread on each half of the English muffin. You can pile the tuna on and use the entire can or save the rest for another time. Place a slice of cheese on top of each half.
Now place them on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper or foil (for easy clean-up). Place the cookie sheet in the broiler for 1-2 minutes until the cheese melts. Cooking time may vary it could take 2-3 minutes it just depends on your oven. Once the cheese has melted remove the baking sheet from the oven and let cool slightly.
Serve this delicious tuna melt with a side of potato chips, fruit, and a crisp dill pickle.
